10 RAD Coconut Oil Uses for Babies & Kids!

Not to sound like a total hippie, but in my circle of friends, we have a saying….”put some coconut oil on it.” It sort of reminds me of Dave Chappelle’s skit about Robitussin. If you’ve never seen it, GOOGLE IT NOW. You won’t be disappointed.

Anyway, Coconut oil is a staple in my house. I use it for so many things, it’s tough to even know where to start with the list. Here are 5 things you can use it for with your babies and kids! By the way, coconut is not an actual nut, and is pretty low on the allergen scale. Therefore, it is generally considered safe to use on babies. As with any new thing, always test a patch on baby’s skin first before using it liberally.


1. Cradle Cap

Cradle cap is a gross, crusty layer of skin that forms on a baby’s head within a couple of weeks after birth. It is totally normal, but looks pretty flaky and strange. It is not harmful for the baby, so really you should just leave it. But if you want it to resolve itself quickly, rub your baby’s head with coconut oil and let it sit. You can use a baby brush and brush the head also to remove some of the dry flakes. Do this everyday for a week to speed up the healing.

2. Toothpaste

Did you know, you can actually use coconut oil as toothpaste?! You can use it neat, or you can mix it into a paste with some baking soda. It’s now being touted as a miracle dental bacterial killer all over the internet and health sites. The best part is that you don’t have to worry about all of those icky ingredients and fluoride in store-bought toothpaste…oh, and it’s CHEAP to make!

3. Diaper Rash Cream

I only ever use cream when my baby actually has somewhat of a rash. I find putting creams and ointments on the bum if there is no rash can sometimes irritate and actually create one. I like to leave it clean and dry all the time. If there is any redness or irritation, I just slather on some coconut oil and maybe a drop of lavender oil and voila, whatever was there is usually gone the next day. It’s great for the bum!

4. Scrapes and Burns

Coconut oil makes the perfect barrier for dust and bacteria lurking around on a scrape or burn. It also has great antiviral and antibacterial properties. The coconut oil will also keep the wound moist and help it not to scar badly. Use straight up or mix with an essential oil of your choice. You can also use under a bandaid.

5. Nipple Cream for Nursing Mothers

I exclusively used coconut oil on my cracked nipples at the start of nursing! I found it worked way better than the lanolin. It HEALED my cracks. I would just apply directly to the nipple after ever nursing session. Don’t worry about washing your nipples off, as coconut oil is not a high allergenic food & most people and babies have no problem with it. Of course, always test a patch on the skin before!

6. Eczema & Baby Acne

When Pearl was little, she had a persistent patch of eczema on her foot. The coconut oil helped a LOT with the irritation. Every time I used it, the rash lessened. It is also good for any other types of skin rashes or irritations.

7. Use it In Baby Food

Coconut oil is an excellent fat source. It is a total superfood, great for adults, babies, and kids. One of my favorite things to add it in is sweet potatoes for my baby food. I just blend up a roasted sweet potato with a heaping tablespoon of coconut oil. Yummy! You can use it in all baby food as well, in place of where you would use butter.

8. Ear Infection

I have not tried this one personally, because my kids have never had ear infections, but supposedly it works. 1-2 drops in each ear helps fight the infection, as coconut oil is very antibacterial and anti microbial.

Yeah, you read that right. Apparently according to a study, it is 90% effective, more so than the chemical shampoos! Read about how to use it HERE.

Speaking from experience, croup is one of the worst viruses a kid can get! That tell tale barky cough caused by the larynx being swollen….it’s the worst! The coughing and shortness of breath are so scary. I know many moms who’s kids have gone to the E.R. because they weren’t breathing properly. It is one scary illness when your kid has it. Rubbing coconut oil mixed with a respiratory blend of essential oils on the chest can be GREAT for opening up the lungs and nasal passages in a pinch to provide deep breathing. Peppermint and Eucalyptus are great respiratory oils but make sure you dilute heavily with coconut oil, as they can sting the skin.

Coconut Oil FUDGE!!! It’s a superfood, and it’s healthy!

Ok, so now, Fudge is a superfood. This recipe for coconut oil fudge is one of the healthiest things you can put in your mouth, so you need to make it immediately. My life has changed since I discovered this recipe. It is 4 simple ingredients, and you will want to shout from the rooftops how pumped you are once you taste it.

I’ll keep this brief in telling you why this fudge is so healthy for you. For one, raw coconut oil is arguably the best fat on the planet. It’s a saturated fat, which means is great for you. It helps regulate cholesterol, can kill bacteria & viruses, helps speed up your metabolism, decrease your appetite for bad fats & sugar, boost brain function, etc. It is recommended to consume a tablespoon of raw coconut oil every day.

The second key component in this “fudge” is CACAO. Not cocoa, but CACAO. Cacao is the actual bean, and raw cacao is not processed. It’s just dehydrated and powdered. Cocoa is a processed from of cacao.

CACAO is the HEALTHIEST FOOD ON THE PLANET. It contains more antioxidants than any other food and is 80% magnesium, creates serotonin in your brain when consumed, helps relax you, decreases appetite, cuts cravings for sugar, makes you emit the “in love” hormone, and they are high in iron.

Cacao is what our chocolate starts as before it’s processed to death. What we buy in the store as chocolate is nowhere near the raw state of cacao.

This fudge has helped me lose my baby weight. I have very high sugar and dessert cravings, and since I started keeping this fudge in my fridge, I am able to eat it instead of some terrible piece of cake or box of cookies. All it takes is a little piece & I am instantly brought down from my bad craving. Make no mistake, fat doesn’t make you fat….this fudge will actually help you burn fat. Now, here is the recipe!

Raw Coconut Oil Fudge:


3/4 cup (heaping) RAW virgin coconut oil
3/4 cup (exact) RAW CACAO powder (if you only have unsweetened cocoa, you can use it, but cacao is much healthier and better)
3-4 tablespoons raw honey
1 pinch of sea salt

optional: cacao nibs, coconut flakes, walnuts


In a stand mixer, or in a bowl with a whisk, whip the coconut oil until it’s a little fluffy, about 2 min. It won’t fluff up like whipped cream, but it should get smooth.


Add in the Cacao powder, honey, and sea salt. Continue to whip the ingredients together until they become smooth and homogenous, about 1 min.

If you just want plain fudge, then you are ready to put the mixture into the pan! If you like a little pizzazz, feel free to add some raw cacao nibs. I like a little extra crunch, so I add about 1/4 cup of cacao nibs to mine & mix them in.


Now, pour the mixture into a small baking dish, about 9×9. Smooth the top out.

If you want to add some toppings, now is the time to do it. I added walnuts, cacao nibs, and coconut flakes, but you can leave it plain and it’s just as delicious.

Put it in the fridge and let it set for a couple of hours. When it’s done, you can cut it into squares so that way it’s ready to eat when you want it! Keep the pan in the fridge, unless you are transferring it to a glass container. Coconut oil is very fragile, and will melt when it gets room temp or hotter. I like to leave mine in the pan so it stays really cold and keeps its crunch.

I’ve gone to the dark side. If you want whiter teeth, you first, have to go dark…and what I mean by dark is, CHARCOAL dark.

Ever heard of activated charcoal? It comes in powder form, tablets, and capsules. It’s an old school remedy for food poisoning, and pumping toxins out of the body. Hospitals still use it to pump peoples’ stomachs with. It’s highly absorbent (supposedly can hold 500 times it’s weight) & is thought to absorb and eliminate toxins. Some say you should always have activated charcoal in your house incase of poison ingestion.

How does this pertain to teeth, you may ask? Well, the idea is that the charcoal will pull toxins out of the mouth & gums as well as remove stains from the teeth. Sounds crazy, right? Considering that the charcoal itself is HIGHLY staining, meaning don’t let it touch anything in your house or it will be stained black forever and ever. Will it stain your teeth? No. It’s magic.

Here is what you do: 

Take an activated charcoal tablet and chew it up a little (loose enough to be brushed and rubbed on your teeth), or dip your toothbrush in activated charcoal powder. Brush all over the teeth softly for about 2 minutes. Rinse, spit, and make sure to not get it into any of the grout around your sink….CAREFUL! Your mouth will feel amazing, clean, and your teeth should be a couple shades whiter. The great thing about this is that it’s safe, and it won’t harm the enamel on your teeth like commercial whiteners and bleaches. It’s not masking the stains, it’s actually removing them. Use as often as needed! If you really wanna take the remineralization of your teeth to the next level, follow this procedure with Oil Pulling! Swish some coconut oil through your mouth and teeth for 5 minutes for maximum effect of whitening, replenishing, and oral health.

15 Cool Uses for Coconut Oil

Here are some fun ways to use up that giant canister of Virgin Coconut Oil sitting in your pantry that you occasionally use to cook with & only purchased because you heard it was good for you….

1. Dandruff

Apply 3 Tbsp of coconut oil (for extra potency add 10 drops tea tree oil) to your head and massage into the scalp. Let it sit for an hour, then shampoo your hair as your regularly would. No need for conditioner as your hair will be super soft after! Repeat every few days till the problem clears up.

2. Cradle Cap

If your baby has that funky cradle cap, apply some coconut oil straight up to the head, let it sit, then gently scrub some of the flakiness off with a soft baby brush. You can apply the coconut oil as frequent as you like, but make sure not to brush too much. We don’t want to irritate the skin.

3. Shaving Cream

Apply coconut oil to your legs, arms, or wherever else. Shave as you normally would. The oil creates a great barrier and softens hair follicles, thus making for a smoother shave.

4. Eye Makeup Remover

Put a little dab on a cotton ball and use to wipe off all that black stuff. Works like a charm.

5. Sex Lube

Yeah, you heard me right. Coconut Oil serves as an excellent sex lube. It has natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, so it’s good for not disrupting the natural flora of your hoo-ha. Beware, though, it is not latex compatible, so if you’re using latex condoms, stick to a water based lube instead.

6. Acid Reflux

Taking 3 Tbsp of Coconut Oil daily can drastically reduce acid reflux & even help stomach ulcers. It can be hard to ingest that much oil, so find interesting ways to do so. You can put some in your tea or even in a veggie capsule.

7. Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Steer clear of the bio-oil & other not-so-great oils. Stick with all natural, virgin coconut oil. It has a really pleasant smell, and it works wonders for keeping your skin nice and taught.

8. Body Scrub

One of my favorite ways to use coconut oil, strangely enough, is to put some on a q-tip and rub it around the inside of my nostrils. I find this works best if you mix it with a little tea tree oil. I love doing this before I go on airplanes or anywhere else I’m going to be exposed to a lot of germs. It works so well at blocking out pathogens & keeping the nasal passages moist. Also works for helping allergies!

11. Increase Milk Supply

Take 3-4 Tbsp a day to increase boob milk supply

12. Remineralize Teeth

This sounds strange, but “oil pulling” with coconut oil daily helps to remineralize (make stronger) your teeth. It also whitens them. Simply put a tsp of coconut oil under the tongue and swish back and forth between lower teeth & around mouth for 15 min daily. This is a cool way to eliminate toxins as well.

13. Treatment for Yeast Infection

Soak a tampon in coconut oil, insert into vagina & leave in overnight. I haven’t had the privilege of trying this one yet, but I’m sure it works considering the high anti-fungal properties of coconut oil.
