All About Essential Oils

The #1 thing I’ve been getting e-mails and questions about recently is Essential Oils. It has taken me a while to figure out how I wanted to approach this topic, because for me, it’s very personal. Ever since I started using essential oils every day, it’s changed my life in such a positive way.

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.16.32 PM

The first thing you need to know is that not all essential oils are created equally. Most brands on your shelves at Whole Foods contain preservatives and fillers, EVEN IF the bottle says “100% pure”. The FDA allows them to write that as long as the bottle contains at least 10% essential oil. What this means is that they lack the potency you need to be able to treat ailments & have good results. The ONLY brand of oils I use is DoTerra

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.21.30 PM

DoTerra’s oils are miraculous. For instance, ONE drop of their peppermint oil is equal to 24 cups of peppermint tea. You cannot find this potency anywhere else. Unfortunately, they only sell their product online. The oils are more expensive than most sold in stores, but they are SO worth it. I’ve gotten rid of 75% of my moisturizers, medications, and cleaning supplies and now use oils exclusively in their place.

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.20.30 PM

I’ve gotten my whole family, including my mother-in-law addicted to the oils. Sharon’s favorite oil is peppermint, and she uses one drop on the tongue as a breath freshener instead of gum or a mint! You cannot do this with most oils. DoTerra’s oils are SO pure, they can be, and are recommended to be ingested( (most of them, but some plants ya just can’t eat). This is why I had to put the disclaimer up before I start telling you what to do with these oils. Don’t go swallowing up something from the store unless it specifically says on the bottle that it’s suitable for ingestion (dietary use).

What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. They are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants.

Facts about essential oils:

  • They do not include fatty acids or lipids found in animal or vegetable oils
  • Essential oils are IMMEDIATELY absorbed by the skin
  • They have been used throughout ancient history, and have recently been recognized as medicine by cutting edge physicians
  • You cannot overdose on essential oils because your body recognizes it as a food source, not a foreign substance
  • You can mix as many oils as you want, meaning they won’t interact with each other
  • You can benefit spiritually, emotionally & physically from oils
  • Essential oils can be used aromatically, topically, or dietarily
  • When inhaled, essentials oils trigger the limbic system, connected to your heart rate, hormone balance, stress level, breathing, memory, & blood pressure
  • The use of essential oils can have profound effects physically and psychologically
  • Oils can be used on babies and children, the stronger ones should be used with a carrier oil such as coconut oil

Here are my top 10 oils and what they can be used for, as well as a personal healing experience I’ve had with each:

1. Lemon

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.49.16 PM

Lemon oil can be used aromatically, topically, or ingested. I put several drops in my water throughout the day. It tastes and smells incredible. It can be used to treat heartburn, depression, anxiety, blood pressure, cold sores, colds, concentration, bug bites, dry throat, diarrhea, fever, stress, varicose veins, and literally 100 other things. When I start to feel a sore throat coming on, I drink tons of lemon oil in warm water, and I also rub lemon oil all over my neck. I also put it in my aroma diffuser & the scent calms my anxiety.

2. Serenity

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.50.54 PM

Serenity is a special relaxing blend sold exclusively by DoTerra. The beauty about their blends is that they contain several different oils which costs you less money because you don’t have to buy them all! It can be used topically or aromatically. Serenity is like natural Xanax for me. I smell it and rub it on my temples before I sleep at night and it knocks me out. I also rub some on Pearl’s chest every night. When I fly on an airplane, I keep it in my pocket & give it a sniff when I feel nervous. Serenity contains: Lavender, Sweet Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang & Sandalwood. I can’t live without this stuff! Hands down, a must-have for me.

3. On Guard

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.50.44 PM

Another blend from DoTerra. This oil is as legit as it gets. Can be used topically, aromatically, or internally. Forget about using clorox, because this stuff is the ultimate germ killer. You can use it to make mouthwash, toothpaste, household cleaners, and to fight off that nasty cold. This blend contains: Wild Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, & Rosemary…all powerful anti-bacterial & antiviral containing oils. When I feel the slightest bit like I’m getting sick, I put 3 drops of On Guard in a shot glass of water & toss it back. I also rub it all over the bottoms of my feet ( it’s absorbed quickly into the blood stream that way). I make my own hand soap with this stuff as well as a germ killing spray I use on airplane surfaces. This oil comes with high recommendations from yours truly.

4. Melaleuca (Tea Tree Oil)

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.49.27 PM

If I had to marry one oil it’d probably be Melaleuca. We spend a lot of time together. I have cured so many things with this stuff. From my friend’s dog’s yeast problem in her ears to my own daughter’s ear infection….the list is endless. It is a highly antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory miracle oil. I use this stuff almost every day. Can be used topically, aromatically, or internally. Here are some common uses: wounds, ear infection, earache, canker sores, bronchitis, acne, allergies, staph infection, warts, etc.

5. Oregano

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.49.40 PM

Oregano Oil is one of the main things drug companies DON’T want anyone to find out about. It is one of the best antibiotics out there. Forget about your Z-Pack, this stuff is the tits when it comes to killing any type of sinus infection, sore throat, or whatever type of crud you have going on. It is so strong and potent I cannot bare to ingest it in pure form. Since I am a wuss, at the first sign of a cold or infection, I put 3 drops in an empty gel capsule and take it 3 times a day. You have to be really aggressive with the oils when you’re sick. Also, don’t take the oregano oil in high doses for longer than about a week. It is SUCH a strong anti-biotic you want to stay on it about as long as you would a prescription. It’s so cool because oregano oil seeks out the BAD in your system and kills it whereas a prescription antibiotic just kills everything good and bad thus making you feel crappier than before while lowering your resistance. Funny how that works, huh?

6. Digest-Zen

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.50.36 PM

This oil blend is awesome for all things stomach related. It contains: Ginger, Peppermint, Tarragon, Fennel, Caraway, Coriander, & Anise. If I ever have heartburn or feel a little off in the tummy area, I put 3 drops of this in a shot glass of water & down the hatch. Can also be rubbed on the stomach in the bothersome area. I have yet to run into a situation where digest-zen hasn’t stopped a stomach ache within 5 minutes.

7. Peppermint

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.49.44 PMSuch a great, natural way to clear out those nasal passages. ONE drop of this in your mouth makes your eyes water. It’s amazing for freshening the breath. You will never want to use a breath mint again. It’s like the equivalent of 10 Altoids in your mouth at once. One drop of this oil is equal to 24 cups of peppermint tea. It’s wonderful for clearing out your sinuses, allergies, stomach ache, asthma, autism, bacterial infections, cold sores, flu, gastritis, bug bites, itching, & aids in alertness. My favorite thing to do with peppermint oil is to mix it with Frankincense & inhale it. It is like an instant cup of coffee!

8. Frankincense

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.58.32 PM

One of the most ancient and widely used oils in the world. I love this oil because when mixed with any other oil, it enhances the healing properties. It’s great for anti-aging, arthritis, asthma, MS, depression, vision, and preventing diseases. Frankincense was one of the oil used in “grave robbers’ oil”. In ancient times, the grave robbers would rub the oil  on themselves before they robbed graves of victims of the plague as not to get sick. Not to sound like a hippie, but something about this oil makes me feel really connected to history and the Earth.

9. Helichrysum

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.58.40 PMI remember getting this oil thinking, “I’ll never use this one.” Funny, I ended up finishing this bottle first out of all of my oils! This stuff is so bomb I get all worked up when I think about it. I’ve used it to treat eczema, cuts, bruises, ear infections, etc. It’s one of those oils where If I don’t know what to do, I just throw a lil’ helichrysum on it. I had this weird rash on the back of my neck once, and it kept getting worse over a week’s time. So, I said, “ok here goes nothing…” I applied helichrysum a few times a day for 2 days. That’s all it took, it was completely gone after that.

10. Balance

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.50.17 PMBalance is a beautiful blend of Spruce, Rosewood, Blue Tansy, and Frankincense. This oil has really aided in calming me down if I’m anxious as well as making me feel more balanced, overall. I just inhale it or put a few drops in my bath water. It makes me feel so clear headed, I swear, it turns me into a monk. It’s great for ADHD, back pain, depression, anxiety, mood swings, seizures, jet lag, energy, etc. I really love the smell of this one as well!

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 1.14.40 AM

So by now you’re probably thinking, “Damn, this shit is expensive and she’s crazy for even suggesting I buy this stuff.”  Yeah, this shit is expensive, at first. But so are pharmaceuticals. It’s a great investment if you’re serious about making the change. My friend just recently got off of Nexium for a stomach ulcer that was costing her $450 dollars a month. She switched to a wheat free, processed food free diet & is now on an oil regimen. She is doing absolutely amazing & loving the oils.

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 1.03.04 AM

You don’t have to get all the oils at once. Find out what is most important to you, and build your oil collection from there. I’m to the point now where I use practically zero over the counter medicines. I have found replacements for pretty much everything I had in my medicine cabinet & more. Your initial investment will be costly, but the oils last FOREVERRRRR unless you’re like me and you like to drink them a lot….

Screen Shot 2013-04-23 at 11.20.45 PM

One last thing…The handbook I use for the oils is the most immaculate Bible for essential oils. You can buy it on amazon. It has almost every single ailment in the book, and it is also a glossary for every oil and oil blend. It is crucial to get this book when you get the oils. Buy it HERE

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 1.21.35 AM

I hope this was an informative lesson for you all. Please feel free to e-mail or comment with any questions! Good luck in your oil endeavors!

How To Eat Healthy On A Budget

So, I’ve been getting a lot of angsty tweets from moms saying things like, “Sorry, I can’t afford organic food, I’m not rich!”, and “Not all of us can find these healthy ingredients in our local stores.” Okay, okay. Enough whining peeps. The truth is, you CAN afford to feed your family healthy, clean food on a small budget. I know several families who do. There is NO excuse to not give your kids healthy things 90% of the time. I’m going to show you how.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 4.37.37 PM1. You don’t need to buy EVERYTHING organic

Some foods are dirtier than others. HERE is a list of the “dirty dozen” aka 12 foods you should buy organic. Foods with hard outer shells are less likely to be pesticide dense. This is a simple way for you to be able to pick and choose how you spend your money on organic goods.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.07.32 PM2. Grow your own vegetable garden

This sounds difficult, but it really isn’t. I have my own vegetable garden that is no bigger than 3×12 feet. I grow cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and eggplant as well as herbs in planter pots. This is a GREAT way to save money. You can have an abundance of normally expensive organic produce for FREE in your own yard. It’s also a fun activity to do with your kids. I googled how to plant a garden and did it myself. It’s that easy.  Bam, no excuses.

This is an actual photo of my vegetable garden at home.

This is an actual photo of my vegetable garden at home.

3. Buy in bulk when there’s a good deal, and preserve the leftovers

When my tomato plants spit out a zillion tomatoes, I make salsa and can it, as well as strawberry jam with my abundant strawberry harvest. You can can anything: Pickles, green beans, tomatoes, onions, etc. You can dehydrate the tomatoes in the oven as well and use them for so many dishes. Freezing your berries is also great for smoothies. Once again, there is endless info on how to do this stuff on google.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.10.35 PM4. Buy frozen organic produce

Freezing something does not lessen the nutritional value. So, check the frozen foods aisle for organic frozen vegetables and fruit instead of buying something fresh if you’re going to be cooking it anyway. For example, frozen organic green beans are generally cheaper than fresh ones, and fresh ones go bad quickly.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.13.43 PM

5. Make your own butter

Organic butter can be expensive. HERE is a great recipe for making butter. All it involves is heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Cheaper and tastier.

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.15.20 PM

6. Make your own bread

This is easier than you think. If sprouted grain bread is too hardcore for you, start out with a basic whole grain recipe. You can google a zillion recipes for that, but I won’t give a link because I’m not a huge fan of wheat. I make my own bread using flax seeds:

FLAX SEED BREAD <–click for video tutorial

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.16.45 PM7. Stay away from pre-packaged food

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 5.23.05 PMHere are some commonly used pre-packaged items that can be easily made into organic food:

  • Shake N’ Bake chicken coating- take a leftover loaf of bread or baguette and leave it out over night, uncovered. The next day the bread will be hard. The next day, cut the bread into chunks, and grind it up into crumbs in the food processor. Bam, that’s what breadcrumbs are, folks. Add some dried herbs: salt, pepper, paprika, garlic salt, oregano, basil, and onion powder & there ya go, shake n bake chicken without cancer. Every time I have an old loaf of bread, I dry it, grind it, and freeze it in a bag so I always have fresh breadcrumbs.
  • Organic Salad Dressing- combine olive oil, juice of a freshly squeezed lemon or lime, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, and a teaspoon of grainy dijon mustard. Whisk together. Super cheap & delicious.
  • Organic Whipped Cream- Empty a chilled container of heavy whipping cream into a stand mixer, along with 2 tsp of vanilla extract. Whip till it becomes whipped cream!
  • Organic Baked French Fries- cut potatoes into french fry sticks (not thin). Coat with olive oil, salt & pepper. Spread on baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes, turning and flipping fries every 15-20 min. Can also be done with sweet potatoes. These are insanely delicious.

8. Cut back on spending in other areas

It is worth it to give your family what they need nutritionally, I promise. If you can afford to not buy certain things you don’t need during the month, spend that money on GOOD groceries. Your health is important.

The list goes on…From now on, every time you go to cook or eat something pre-packaged, google to find out if there’s a way to mimic the recipe using real, whole food ingredients. That is a great way to start transitioning into healthier eating habits. Just to prove to my skeptics that this can be done without spending a ton of money, I will regularly be posting photos and recipes of the foods I cook and eat.

Happy Eating!

Homemade Whipped Coconut Oil Body Butter for you & baby! (video)

This is so easy! I found this idea on Pinterest, and decided to do it since I had the simple ingredients already. I made a video to show you just how easy it is! Love having a moisturizer that is easy to use and chemical free! Use it on yourself and baby!

Helpful Tip : Make sure your coconut oil is SOLID. It gets a little melty as you whip it, so my advice is to whip it for a couple minutes, then stick the bowl in the refrigerator for a couple minutes to get it nice and cold. OR you can put the bowl in the freezer for a little bit before you start the process, just to keep the coconut oil cold! Also, store in a COOL place, not by a heater or something…

What Makeup Do I Use?

Lots of people ask me what are some of my favorite brands. While I’m not a makeup artist, I do have lots of friends who are. Also, I’ve consistently had my makeup done professionally for work over the years. Here are some of my fav’s that I’ve used and continue to use:

1. FOUNDATIONS

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.53.24 PM

Nars Sheer Glow, Armani Maestro, Chanel, & Josie Maran

2. POWDERS

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.53.39 PM

Mac Studiofix, Dior, and Makeup Forever transluscent

3. CONCEALERS

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.52.42 PM

My #1 is Cle de peau (it covers ANYTHING and doesn’t crease), #2 Le Mer, and #3 Josie Maran

4. BRONZER

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.57.54 PM

Only bronzer I use anymore is Chanel (in soleil de tan). I love the color as it isn’t orange it just gives you a great color. Also, Nars in Laguna is a classic, great color as well.

5. BLUSH

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.00.17 PM

Since I don’t look great with peachy tones, I prefer to use a little bit of a bright, bold color. My FAVORITE right now is “Desire” by NARS.

6. EYE LINER

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.03.46 PM

I only use eye liner on the top of my eyelids, like a cat eye. I don’t usually wear eye shadow. The eyeliner I love that doesn’t smudge and is super easy to put on is “aquaeyes” by Makeup Forever. It has a pointed tip for extra easy precision. Pretty much impossible to mess up.Try it in brown for a less severe, more sexy, natural look. It also comes in a ton of different colors!

7. MASCARA

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.06.13 PM

I am a mascara snob. First, ALWAYS CURL YOUR LASHES! I find Mac has some pretty good mascaras. I’ve used them all, along with every other brand at Sephora. My favorite right now is Mac’s “Extreme Dimensions Mascara”….I like the look of a thicker lash. This certainly does the trick. Easy to apply, and the brush is good. Another good one from mac is their “falsies”.

8. LIPS

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 9.15.38 PM

I am always a fan of a good nude lip, especially if you have thick dark lashes, and a dark eyeliner on. Some of my favorite nude lip colors are:

Sephora Rouge Shine Lipstick- Dolce Nude (they recently changed it to Honeymoon I think but it’s one of my fav colors ever)

Buxom Brand- Marrakech (it’s a matte color)

Nars- Tashkent (also matte)

Mac- Myth

Tomorrow I will post a video of me doing my own makeup, so you can see how important it is to use good brushes!

The Best Foundation I’ve Ever Used

Ok, ladies, this will change your life! I’ve used hundred of foundations over the years, and I have to say this one takes the cake. It is so smooth, and light, but has GREAT coverage. You only need like 3-4 drops for your whole face. It has the texture of oil but dries as soon as it goes on. It is absolutely amazing. I can’t say enough about it! It is…

Armani Maestro Fusion Makeup

Screen Shot 2013-01-17 at 8.29.14 PM

It comes in a dropper bottle. My mother in law is the one who showed it to me. Apparently, it’s just come out recently. I decided to try it and i’m totally hooked. It doesn’t make my face oily during the day, and you don’t even need to put powder over it. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my skin lately! It’s a little pricey ($62) but lasts a long time. If you’re already buying expensive foundation, it’s def worth the switch! Brands I used to use are : Nars, Chanel, Mac, Makeup Forever, Dior, Laura Mercier, and Josie Maran

This one trumps them all. Armani sells many diff foundations, and I have a few of them. This one is the best. Try it!

Just for reference, the color I use is 5.5

Armani is sold online and at Nordstrom and other dept stores like Neiman Marcus

My Easy Tips for Losing Weight

Here are some things that have kept me from gaining too much weight over the years. Also, I like to kick start this routine after holidays and periods where I get lazy and don’t work out/ eat whatever I want! They are simple principles, but if you stick to them, you should be able to drop about 10 lbs in a month or so, depending on your starting weight.

1. Cut Out Dairy

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 4.04.17 PMI’ve heard from a couple of trainers over the years that if you ingest dairy, it takes 4 times longer to digest than most other foods. In my experience, when I didn’t cut out dairy, I still had a layer of stomach fat over the muscle, regardless of how skinny I got. Cut it out and be amazed. Dairy includes YOGURT, guys. Yogurt is packed with sugar and it is a dairy product as well. If you want the pro-biotic benefits, then take a probiotic capsule or drink. I recommend Bio-K from Fermented Rice

2. Cut Out Carbohydrates (or greatly limit them)

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 4.10.55 PM

I have had numerous stents where I stopped eating carbs, and dropped weight and bloat in virtually no time. This means NO bread, pasta, potatoes, french fries, rice (doesn’t matter if it’s brown, its still rice!), etc. I’m even not a fan of quinoa, as it is still high in carbohydrates.  There are actually a lot of carbohydrates in certain fruits and vegetables that you need to avoid. I will list those later in another section.

3. Cut Out Sugar

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 9.26.23 PMThis includes the obvious: pastries, candy, soda, JUICE (yes, even fruit juice is high in sugar and should not be ingested if you’re trying to lose weight.) Before you eat something, look at the ingredients. You shouldn’t eat anything that is over 5-10 (10 is pushing it) grams of sugar per serving. Fruit is loaded with sugar AND carbohydrates. Yes, it is natural sugar, but so what. Sugar is sugar. Fruit is not bad, guys….that’s not what I’m trying to say. My point is that if you want to lose weight, don’t go eating a bunch of fruit thinking you’re doing the right thing. If you want fruit, have ONE portion in the MORNING. Keep your carbs & sugar low, and only ingest them before 2 p.m. to assure you will properly burn them off before night time!

4. Beware of Fattening Food Disguised as Healthy Food

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 9.45.28 PM

  • Some examples of this are but not limited to:

  • Bananas (carbohydrate sticks)
  • Yogurt (carb and sugar loaded)
  • Fruit (carb and sugar loaded)
  • Corn (carb and sugar loaded)
  • Peas (carb and sugar loaded)
  • Beans (carb loaded)
  • “Wheat” anything- companies put “WHOLE WHEAT” on things to make you think it’s healthy. It’s not.
  • Juice (fruit juices- fresh or store bought)
  • Brown Rice (sorry guys, it’s still rice!)
  • Honey (sugar)
  • Diet Microwave TV Dinners (most contain a redic amount of carbs and sodium!)
  • Rice Cakes (empty calories and high in carbs)
  • Veggie Burgers (don’t even get me started)
  • Slim Fast Shakes (Possibly the worst thing ever. Full of sugar and carbs and don’t make you full)
  • Some vegetables like all winter squash, beets, and carrots are high in sugar per serving
  • Canned Vegetables are high in sodium and low in nutrients
  • Things labeled as “Natural!”…yeah, sugar is a natural substance, doesn’t mean it’s good for you!

5. Don’t Starve Yourself

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 9.57.25 PM

Think of the body like a fire, and food as the wood/fuel. The more you put in your body (in quantities small enough to be metabolized quickly), the faster your metabolism will be. Starving yourself does not work. Eat small portions of protein and vegetable dense food every few hours throughout the day. Eating 6 small meals and snacks a day is the way to go. Also, if you eat when you aren’t hungry, you greatly decrease your likelihood of making poor food choices when you’re actually hungry and desperate to eat something quickly!

6. What You Should Be Eating

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 10.04.05 PM

You should be eating lean meats such as chicken, bison, turkey, and fish. Also, stick to dark green vegetables such as kale, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, etc. Eggs can also be your best friend during this time. Eat them boiled with a little bit of hot sauce for breakfast! Avocado is great with it, too. Salads are always a great choice, so long as your dressing is along the lines of oil and vinegar (beware of store bought and restaurant dressings as they usually put sugar in them.) Salmon is a great source of protein, and it really fills you up.

Additional Tips:

*Cut down salt. Substitute with yummy spices!

*Add lemon to almost everything for flavor boosting

*Stop eating as soon as you have to take a big breath during your meal. It’s always my signal that my tummy is actually full

*Do a GREENS juice cleanse for a couple days before starting a new diet to jumpstart it!

How to Keep From Getting Sick!

It seems like everyone right now has the flu or a cold….here are a couple of tips that have kept Jack and I healthy recently!

1. Grapefruit Seed Extract

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 2.38.50 PM

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 2.39.11 PM

This stuff works wonders. Very high in antiviral properties. It tastes horrible, so I HIGHLY recommend buying empty gelatin capsules and squeezing the gel into the capsule instead of drinking it in a liquid. Also, the bottle will tell you to take 3 or so drops. Don’t mind that, fill up a capsule with as much as you want. The more the better. You can do this once a day, and if you’re already sick, do it about 3 times.

2. Acerola Powder

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 2.39.23 PM

This stuff is vitamin C in a bioavailable food form. In other words, it is absorbed way better than any other form of vitamin C. Mix it in with a liquid and drink. It doesn’t taste bad at all! Take this once a day or more if you’re already sick.

3. Wellness Formula

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 2.39.47 PM

This stuff is great! Take 3 pills 3 times a day. Easy to remember, right?

4. KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN!

Screen Shot 2012-12-31 at 2.40.33 PM

We touch our face a ridiculous amount of times a day. Keep your fingers out of your mouth and keep your hands sanitized obsessively.

5. Coconut Oil

One of the main reasons people get sick is because the inside of their noses become dry and small cracks develop. This makes it easy for airborne viruses to get into your blood stream. To keep your nose moist, put some virgin coconut oil on a Q-tip and rub in the inside of your nose during the day and before you go to bed. It is also high in antiviral and antibacterial properties!

My Pregnancy Sickness Remedies

So everyone knows the standard ginger tea and sea bands routine for pregnancy nausea ( I refuse to call it morning sickness because that’s just an insult to pregnant women everywhere who suffer 24 hrs from this). Here are some things you may not know about that helped me SO much with my nausea that lasted pretty much through my entire pregnancy! I couldn’t put anything in my mouth without gagging. Yes, that includes a toothbrush, a sip of water, a piece of gum, etc.

1.  Club Soda with Lime

Anytime I feel heart-burny, or gaggy, pregnant or not, a great refresher for your tummy is club soda over ice with plenty of lime squeezed in it. Drink it ice cold. This works WONDERS.

2. Sniffing a Lemon

Something about lemon zest really mellows out the intensity of nausea. I would carry a lemon in my purse, scratch the surface of it with my nails to stir up the good oils, and give it a few sniffs when I felt barfy.

3. EAT even when you feel sick or are throwing up

One of the most torturous things I endured during my pregnancy was having to force down food WHILE gagging. It is cruel and unusual punishment. There is this myth that everyone believes: all pregnant women are hungry and love to eat. FALSE. I hated eating and could barely hold anything down. EAT EAT EAT even when you feel sick. It can sometimes instantly alleviate nausea.

4. ALWAYS have a snack in your purse

This is a very important rule for all pregnant women. If you go longer than a couple hours without food, you will be SICK (most people). Always have a bag of nuts, an apple, or a granola bar in your purse for when those  ”I HAVE TO EAT NOW, OR ELSE” moments occur. I can recall handing my pregnant sister and apple out of her purse while she was dry heaving and driving at the same time. Watching her eat that apple and gag at the same time was traumatizing. What was even crazier was that as soon as she got like 3 bites down she stopped gagging and acted like this was totally normal.

5. Consider taking your pre-natal vitamin at night

If you take it at night after a big dinner, your tummy has been well adjusted to food all day, thus making a better cushion for that vitamin. This is just my theory with no scientific evidence to back it up, but it worked for me. Also, consider switching to NEW CHAPTER PRE-NATALS because they are awesome. Order them online or get them at Whole Foods. They are full of AWESOME stuff that your body needs! As soon as I started taking them I felt at least 1/3 better than I did before. True Story.
