15 Cool Uses for Coconut Oil

Here are some fun ways to use up that giant canister of Virgin Coconut Oil sitting in your pantry that you occasionally use to cook with & only purchased because you heard it was good for you….

1. Dandruff

Apply 3 Tbsp of coconut oil (for extra potency add 10 drops tea tree oil) to your head and massage into the scalp. Let it sit for an hour, then shampoo your hair as your regularly would. No need for conditioner as your hair will be super soft after! Repeat every few days till the problem clears up.

2. Cradle Cap

If your baby has that funky cradle cap, apply some coconut oil straight up to the head, let it sit, then gently scrub some of the flakiness off with a soft baby brush. You can apply the coconut oil as frequent as you like, but make sure not to brush too much. We don’t want to irritate the skin.

3. Shaving Cream

Apply coconut oil to your legs, arms, or wherever else. Shave as you normally would. The oil creates a great barrier and softens hair follicles, thus making for a smoother shave.

4. Eye Makeup Remover

Put a little dab on a cotton ball and use to wipe off all that black stuff. Works like a charm.

5. Sex Lube

Yeah, you heard me right. Coconut Oil serves as an excellent sex lube. It has natural antibacterial and antiviral properties, so it’s good for not disrupting the natural flora of your hoo-ha. Beware, though, it is not latex compatible, so if you’re using latex condoms, stick to a water based lube instead.

6. Acid Reflux

Taking 3 Tbsp of Coconut Oil daily can drastically reduce acid reflux & even help stomach ulcers. It can be hard to ingest that much oil, so find interesting ways to do so. You can put some in your tea or even in a veggie capsule.

7. Prevent Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

Steer clear of the bio-oil & other not-so-great oils. Stick with all natural, virgin coconut oil. It has a really pleasant smell, and it works wonders for keeping your skin nice and taught.

8. Body Scrub

9. Nipple Cream for Nursing

Use in place of Lanolin & other creams to care for painful, chapped nips.

10. Illness preventer

One of my favorite ways to use coconut oil, strangely enough, is to put some on a q-tip and rub it around the inside of my nostrils. I find this works best if you mix it with a little tea tree oil. I love doing this before I go on airplanes or anywhere else I’m going to be exposed to a lot of germs. It works so well at blocking out pathogens & keeping the nasal passages moist. Also works for helping allergies!

11. Increase Milk Supply

Take 3-4 Tbsp a day to increase boob milk supply

12. Remineralize Teeth

This sounds strange, but “oil pulling” with coconut oil daily helps to remineralize (make stronger) your teeth. It also whitens them. Simply put a tsp of coconut oil under the tongue and swish back and forth between lower teeth & around mouth for 15 min daily. This is a cool way to eliminate toxins as well.

13. Treatment for Yeast Infection

Soak a tampon in coconut oil, insert into vagina & leave in overnight. I haven’t had the privilege of trying this one yet, but I’m sure it works considering the high anti-fungal properties of coconut oil.

14. Homemade Deodorant

15. Wound Care

Instead of Neosporin, try slathering some coconut oil on your next boo boo. It will help repair the abrasion quickly while fighting infection.

I use coconut oil as a face wash and I love it! I don’t use moisturizer at all anymore just some extra coconut oil if I’m dry. My face is balanced, hardly any breakouts and the dark circles under my eyes went away. Amazing stuff! I also use it for my daughter’s yeasty diaper rashes, sunburn, moisturizer, deep hair conditioner and anything else I can slather it on.

I use it as a leave-in conditioner for my hair. I comb it through the ends at night then wash it out the next morning….. beautiful soft shiny hair. Same results as any expensive conditioning treatment I’ve used!

I heard that Virgin Coconut Oil is good treatment for Keratosis Pilaris (little red raised hair follicles commonly found on arms, face, etc. Not harmful, just super annoying and definitely make you self conscious!) I’ve been prescribed steroid cream for these bumps….have you heard anything about this use for coconut oil, Lisa? Thanks!

      Hi Mun,
I had a rash similar to the one you’ve described and put steroid cream on it, but that didn’t make any difference to the rash. So I though I’d try Coconut Oil on it. Within 12 hours, the rash had all but disappeared. When it began to get a little itchy and red again the next day, I put some more on. Again, within a few hours, the bumps and redness were gone. I now use it for scratches and skin abrasions that I get out in the garden and they heal up without redness or itching right away. It truly is amazing stuff!

I’m allergic to coconut and wish I wasn’t because of the amazing things you can do with it. Do you know any good substitutes for coconut oil?

Some lovely alternatives to cc oil are: walnut oil, avocado oil, grape see oil, extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil. Basically if its got oil in it and its all natural its going to be good for you. Castor oil in good for ingesting. Pill form in best, as you should do with fish oils, krill oils, and garlic. This helps to reduce smell, and prevents the taker from tasting the oil, which to some can be very unpleasant.

I love coconut oil ! I have been using it on my face and I rarely get pimples anymore, I also use it as on my hair when I scrunch it ( but not by my scalp to oily ) . And for hand cream ! And I give it to my dog and his coat is beautiful and I brush his teeth with it and they are sparkly white !

I use my coconut oil for everything, but my favorite use is as a sunscreen/ natural tanner. Works great and I don’t get a bad burn anymore.

I used it on my Doodle, Yes.. My dog. She gets yeast and infection in her ears. I read that coconut oil is good for our yeast infections, fights against them. CoCo developed an ear infection and yeast smell. I massaged the oil in there couple times a day. It cleared it up within a few days!

My dog used to get yeast infections in his ears, and we switched the dog food to kibble that doesn’t have beef in it and haven’t had a yeast infection in his ears since! Just FYI.

I have seborrhoeic dermatitis and coconut oil works great! People have already commented on cradle cap, it is the same thing basically, but in adults and in my case pretty much all over. I put it on my skin AND eat it, both help. I hate using large amounts of steroids, coconut oil works and I’m not worried about its long term use.

  10. I suffer terribly with candida infection I tried just about every OTC. I searched the internet and came across cocconut oil. I decided before I take a trip to the doctor for the usual antibiotic, I tried coconut oil as a last resort and I had instant relief the next day it was completely gone. I am so impressed by it. It is my lifesaver!

You can just swallow it, though it is kind of gross. You can also put the oil in coffee like you would creamer, or just put some in some empty gelatin capsules and swallow if you want to take it internally.

  11. Hi. For your Va jay jay, you can put some organic coconut oil in strips of foil and roll it up Like a suppository and place in the freezer for up to 5 Mins. remove from freezer, I would place in a bag with an ice cube and carry up to your bedroom. Make sure u was ur hands. This should be done when your ready to lay down for the night because once you unroll the foil and it’s in contact with body heat it instantly starts to melt. So have a clean pair of cotton panties next to you with a sanitary pad in place, lie on your back and insert coconut Oil suppository in to your va jay jay , quickly put panties and pad on and lie in the bed immediately. You will instantly feel the oil melting. If you get out the bed after doing so will increase the chance of the oil NOT working, because instead of sitting in you, it would drain out. So remember to do this when your ready to lay in the bed for the night. Ok ladies I hope this was helpful
