Which Store-Bought Formula Is Best?

If you are a mother who cannot breastfeed for whatever reason, or you’re ready to move on to formula, don’t feel bad. Being a mom is hard enough, and it sucks that people will ridicule mothers who feed their children formula. You’re doing a great job, so don’t let anyone put you down!

Screen Shot 2013-03-10 at 10.04.28 PMIf you’re like me, when I started giving Pearl formula, I was a crazy person researching every single ingredient in every formula, comparing them all. Sadly, in America, our infant formulas are packed with crappy additives and bottom-of-the-barrel ingredients. Corn syrup and palm-olein are among the many things that are not so great for your kids. Not only does corn syrup spike the blood sugar unlike regular sugar, most of it is coming from GMO corn, which, as we know, makes rats grow ears out of their asses & become covered in tumors.

Screen Shot 2013-03-10 at 10.07.05 PMJust think about the long term effects of these GMO’s on humans. The corn is genetically modified to be less nutrient dense than regular corn, so not only are your cells being deprived of basic nutrition, you’re exposing them to diseases! No wonder everyone has cancer, ADHD, etc. We put horrible things in our food and wonder why everyone is sick and dying.

Screen Shot 2013-03-10 at 10.09.47 PMWith that being said, you do have some good choices when it comes to infant formula. Personally, I try to stay away from Enfamil & Similac as some of their formula’s first ingredients are:

Enfamil Ingredients

Enfamil Gentlease

Similac Ingredients

Similac Sensitive

Yes, you read that correctly. The formula is composed MOSTLY of corn syrup. Gross.

Even “Earth’s Best Organic” tries to hide the fact that they use corn syrup, so really, it’s no better. Here are their ingredients: Notice how they cleverly used the words “glucose syrup solids”…AKA corn syrup. Not to mention, it made my child extremely constipated. They are also owned by the massive food corp Horizon. Surprised?

SO, what formula is safe? You can either make your own baby formula using my recipe HERE …I use raw goats milk, but I know that’s not easy to obtain or affordable for most people. If you are determined to buy store-bought formula, here are your BEST options. Note this post has been revised, as there are better formulas available through international shipping nowadays.

1. Hipp Organic First Infant Milk

Sadly, this is not readily available at your supermarket in the United States. Luckily, we can order it online. Why is this stuff so amazing? So far, it’s the closest formula to breast milk. Those Germans really have it figured out. This stuff is so easily digestible & organic, it makes baby’s poop look just like breast milk poop. You can order this online from many different websites, easily. The European Union has much stricter guidelines than America, so this formula really is the most elite choice. Also, one of their 800g boxes equals two containers of Gerber in weight and price. So, it’s really not anymore expensive.

2. Honest Organic Premium Infant Formula

My second recommendation for infants is the new infant formula brought to you by the Honest company. They are really killing it right now. They do have some glucose solids & a few of my other non-favorite ingredients, BUT at least it’s organic and non GMO. They have also chosen to leave out the DHA that most formulas include, even though it is not proven to be safe due to the hexane method of extraction. The formula is the next generation of baby formulas. This formula is easy for infants to digest as well. It is easily available in the US, and it was just released, so it will be available by store any time now. Read about it HERE on their website.

3. Nature’s One Baby’s Only Organic Formula

After tons of research, I feel like Nature’s One isn’t hiding anything. They label the formula as a “toddler formula” to promote breastfeeding for the first year. It can be constipating, as the milk solids are larger & harder to digest than breastmilk. If your child is older, around 9 months, this formula can be great. I don’t recommend it for small infants, though.

  1. I’m concerned about the glucose syrup solids and the palm oil in the Honest one. Aren’t the Baby’s Only ingredient better? Is your preference for the Honest based more on the reported constipation reviews; cause I did see that they have a lactoRelief option- would that help for babies that experience that?

    • RaddestMom

I think the ingredients in baby’s only are better, yes. My issue lies with constipation. Constipation for an infant can be really hard on the baby and the parents! It’s absolutely horrible to watch your little one pass a stool that is rock solid. It is scary & not good for them either.
Lactose (is a natural sugar) doesn’t make babies constipated, lactose is found in breastmilk in high quantities. What makes baby’s only hard to digest for little babies is that the milk proteins are too large (because they come from cows and not humans) to be broken down by an infant. Some other brands break down the milk proteins and make them smaller and easier to digest. If Baby’s only did this, I think they would be #1…but they don’t so therefore they are not a great option for small infants.
I have never tried the lacto relief version, you could always try it and if it works for you then thats all that matters :)

I am curious to understand the differences between Earth Best organics and Honest Organic. The 2 formulas seem very similar, both certified organic and GMO free but containing organic corn syrup.
Why do you suggest Honest is better? Organic corn syrup is actually listed as a 3rd ingredient on Honest and as a 4th on Earth Best. I actually wonder if they would not be made by the same contract manufacturer, Perrigo Nutritionals…

I think people are preferring the honest because it’s less constipating. That’s the general consensus I’ve been getting.

I’m surprised you don’t think Holle from Germany is the best on this planet? I’ve been getting from Bio Baby.

  4. Sarvi

I’m thinking to get the German brand “Hipp Organic” … What is the most trust worthy way to order this online? I saw the link for formuland but it doesn’t seem secure. Please advise some websites you recommend. Also what about the German brand “Holle” for formula? Any thoughts on that? Any direction would be greatly appreciated. I’m a new mom and can really use some honest and good info!! The sooner the better. I need to order asap. Thanks.

If you are looking to get your formula quick and at a great price, I recommended udderlyorganics.com . They also sell Hipp & Lebenswert. As well as cereals, teas and biscuits. They are the original Holle sellers in the USA. You receive your products within 1 to 3 days and amazing customer service.
